The DGA, WGA, and SAG/AFTRA: Navigating Negotiations with the AMPTP

Updated: Mar 19

A Call for Unity and Progress

The DGA, WGA, and SAG/AFTRA are gearing up for negotiations with the AMPTP. It feels like just yesterday when we stood together with picket signs, showcasing our worth as writers. Our messages were not only about striking but also about the clever quips and sayings that adorned our signs.

As we approach this new round of discussions, I hope cooler heads will prevail. It's crucial for everyone involved to focus on regaining the financial stability lost during the extended strike.

Reflecting on the Past Year

If you recall, the past year has been tumultuous. We faced a strike, followed by the holiday season—a time when work typically halts from the week before Thanksgiving until the week after New Year's. After that, wildfires disrupted lives, and for those who were fortunate enough to escape unscathed, there was a sort of Sundance festival.

Then came the studio implosions, followed by summer vacations where families took time off to recharge. Finally, we realized that Hollywood was grappling with a significant shortage of film credits available for productions. This situation necessitated financial assistance from the state to bring back runaway movies and television shows. Without this support, the entire industry, along with those who help sustain it, faced the risk of starvation.

Fortunately, some funds were allocated, but it was not nearly enough. I sincerely hope that the state addresses this issue more comprehensively soon. In the meantime, I truly wish for the Guilds to reach a deal smoothly this time.

The Importance of Collaboration

In our industry, collaboration is vital. We must come together to ensure that our voices are heard and that our needs are met. The strength of our unions lies in our unity. When we stand together, we can advocate for better conditions and fair compensation.

We believe the best moments—on screen or at the table—start with intention. A story that lingers. A meal that invites people to stay. Though our mediums differ, our work comes from the same place: curiosity, discipline, and a deep respect for process. Whether we’re shaping a narrative or building a dish, we’re interested in connection—how people feel, what they remember, and what brings them back.

Looking Ahead: A Hopeful Future

As we look to the future, I hope for a long runway of work and production ahead. We need it now more than ever. The landscape of our industry is changing, and we must adapt to these shifts.

By fostering open communication and collaboration, we can create a more sustainable environment for everyone involved. It's essential to prioritize the well-being of our community and ensure that every voice is valued.

Thank you for listening.
